Book review from Mrs. JoAnne Whittle

When you read a story about Russia, you can expect that there will be sadness, and very likely fear and possibly horror.  This is the case with Angel on the Square, by Gloria Whelan.  Since it is a children’s story, it is not so horrible concerning the cruelties inflicted at the time of the Russian Revolution (1913-1918), but there are feelings told by the main character, a young girl named Katya.  In the story (but not in real life) she and her mother lived with and served Nicholas II, last czar of Russia, and his family from their days of wealth and ease, until their banishment and deaths.  It shows the decline of the aristocracy of Russia under the new ideas of communism.  Although a painful tale, Angel on the Square brings to life that time and place.
