Dear Parents,

READATHON 2018 is an annual, community based event currently in its 18th year. Our main objectives are to highlight and promote:

● Literacy: students read books with their classes, classmates, parents, and on their own, and achieve goals to receive prizes for participation or excellence.

● Community building: classes cooperate and compete in a variety of activities, such as bookmark design contest and reading competition.

● Fundraising: we are helping in the school effort to support the phase two construction of our school.

This year, our Readathon theme will be “The Reading Tree.” Students will be counting the number of minutes that they read to compete. All the reading that your child does at home (reading independently, reading with others, and reading aloud with kids) can be counted. 1 minute equals to 1 Readathon point, and the students may win prizes by reading. Please encourage your child to read!

We will need your help to count reading minutes that your child does at home. Your child will receive a calendar which you can record the minutes that they have read. The homeroom teacher will also distribute some leaves to your child. Students can write their name, the book title and keywords that they have learnt from the book on a leaf if they get 15 minutes of reading a day. Students can get two leaves if they read for 30 minutes, and so on. All the leaves will be displayed on the reading tree designed by each class. The more that the students read, the more leaves they will get, and therefore the more prizes they may receive–so please help us by recording your child’s reading minutes daily.

Your child will need your help to find sponsors. Sponsors can consider giving a one-time donation or sponsoring your child for a given amount of minutes read. Donations of $100 or above are tax-deductible. Please indicate if a sponsor would like a receipt and be sure to print their first and last names clearly.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,
The Readathon Committee
